In other words, the roof has a direct impact on the comfort and safety of your Suffolk County home.

What is soft wash roof cleaning? How is it different from standard power washing? What are the benefits of soft washing? Below, you’ll find the answers to these and other questions that you and other Suffolk County homeowners have about soft washing a roof.

Soft Wash Roof Cleaning in Dix Hills, NY

Q: What is soft wash roof cleaning?

A: You may have heard the term “soft washing” before, but you may not know what it entails. Basically, soft washing is a special type of cleaning method that involves using a low-pressure washing technique. A dedicated pumping system is used to deliver a blend of cleaning solutions, such as bleach, algaecides, surfactants, and water to a targeted surface. Typically, the pressure that is applied to the water ranges between 40 and 80 psi. The soft wash cleaning method can be used to remove dirt, mold, mildew, algae, lichen, moss, and other organic debris and stains from all types of exterior surfaces, including fences, siding, windows, and of course, roofs.

Q: What’s the difference between soft washing and power washing?

A: While soft washing and power (or pressure) washing might seem similar, and in a sense, they are; however, there are some distinct differences between the two cleaning strategies. While both soft and power washing techniques are used to clean exterior surfaces, the equipment, chemicals, pressure, and techniques that each approach uses differ. The pressure that is applied with power washing is quite powerful, and the water is usually extremely hot. With soft washing, the pressure and water temperature aren’t as severe, and biodegradable cleaning solutions and disinfectants are used to kill bacteria, mold, fungus, moss, and other types of organic matter.

Q: Why should you soft wash and not power wash a roof?

A: Regular cleaning is a vital part of routine roof maintenance; however, when it comes to cleaning your Suffolk County roof, a standard power washer can be much too powerful. Though a roof is designed to withstand harsh conditions, the level of pressure that a standard power washer applies is generally too severe for asphalt shingles, clay tiles, and other types of roofing materials. In other words, power washing can extensively damage a roof, as it can strip away the protective granules, and loosen, crack, or completely tear off shingles or tiles.

Since the level of pressure and the temperature that soft washing applies is much less severe, it’s a much safer alternative to power washing. While it’s much gentler, the cleansers that are used are specially formulated to target and eliminate organic debris, such as mold, moss, mildew, algae, lichen, and just plain old dirt and debris. In other words, soft wash roof cleaning is a safe, yet effective way to improve the appearance and preserve the integrity of your Suffolk County roof. In fact, the reason soft washing was developed in the first place was to clean algae off of roof shingles.

Q: Why should you hire a professional Dix Hills, NY roof cleaning company to soft wash your roof?

A: Like a lot of homeowners, you might be tempted to soft wash your Suffolk County roof on your own. While that’s certainly commendable, some jobs are better left to the professionals, and soft wash roof cleaning is one of those jobs. While it might look pretty simple and straightforward, soft washing is actually a lot more complex than it appears. The right tools, equipment, and cleaning solutions have to be used, and the appropriate techniques and strategies have to be applied.

Though you can certainly watch DIY videos for tips and pointers, and you can rent or purchase the tools and equipment from a local home improvement store, in order to ensure the best results, hiring a reputable Dix Hills, NY roof cleaning company to perform soft wash roof cleaning is a much better bet. Plus, hiring a professional will save you money in the long run. While yes, you will have to pay a professional, you’ll avoid the risk of damaging your Suffolk County property; damages that could cost an exorbitant amount of money to repair.

Q: When should you soft wash your Suffolk County roof?

A: If your roof is starting to show signs of dirt and debris buildup, it’s speckled or streaked with stains, or if algae, moss, lichen, or mold are starting to grow on the surface, you should definitely schedule an appointment with a Dix Hills, NY power washing professional. You don’t have to wait until you see visible dirt, debris, and organic growth to have your roof soft washed, however; having it cleaned every few months if you live in a heavily wooded and damp area, or twice a year – once in the spring and once in the fall – or even just once a year, is highly recommended for preventative maintenance.

Some information about Dix Hills, NY

Dix Hills is an affluent hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) on Long Island in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 26,892 at the 2010 census.

Settlers traded goods with the Indigenous Secatogue tribe for the land that became Dix Hills in 1699. The Secatogues lived in the northern portion of the region during the later half of that century. The land was known as Dick’s Hills. By lore, the name traces to a local native named Dick Pechegan, likely of the Secatogues. Scholar William Wallace Tooker wrote that the addition of the English name ‘Dick’ to the indigenous name ‘Pechegan’ was a common practice.

Tooker wrote that Pechegan’s wigwam and his planted fields became the hilly area’s namesake, known as the shortened ‘Dix Hills’ by 1911. The area was mostly used for farming until after World War II.

In the 1950s, Dix Hills and its neighbors Wyandanch and Melville, along with the area known as Sweet Hollow, proposed to incorporate as a single village. This village would have been known as the Incorporated Village of Half Hollow Hills, would have had an area of roughly 50 square miles (130 km2), and would have embraced the Half Hollow Hills Central School District (CSD 5). The plans were unsuccessful, and these areas would remain unincorporated.
