The Importance of Roof Moss Removal Services for Your Manhasset Hills, NY Home
Like a lot of people, you might think that moss on your roof is harmless. In fact, you might even think it’s charming; that it lends a rustic look to your Nassau County home. In reality, however, moss can actually be extremely harmful to a roof, and while at first, a few small patches may be appealing, before long, your entire roof will be overrun with the organism, and your feelings are pretty much guaranteed to change.
Why is moss hazardous to a roof? Why should you invest in roof moss removal services? To find the answers to these questions, keep on reading.
What is Moss?
Before discussing why moss is harmful to a roof and why roof moss removal is essential, it’s important to understand what moss is in the first place.
A flowerless, spreading plant, moss grows in dense green mats or clumps. It has a fuzzy texture and it can range in color from light, bright green, to deep emerald. It prefers damp, shady environments, and it can grow on various surfaces, including trees, the ground, fences, siding, and roofs.
The plant releases spores, which are carried in the wind, and are transported on various surfaces, including your roof. If your Nassau County house receives a lot of shade, those spores can take hold and bloom. Once the plant blooms, it will continue to spread. Eventually, the entire surface of your roof could be covered in a carpet of green moss that is several inches thick.
Why Moss is Hazardous to a Roof
Though it might lend a rustic, charming appeal, moss can be extremely problematic for a roof, as it can cause serious damage. The more moss there is, the more damage it can cause; however, even just a few patches can cause issues. Plus, because it reproduces and spreads so quickly, just one patch can quickly become a thick carpet of moss.
If left unchecked, extensive damage can occur. Examples of some of the issues that could arise if moss is growing on your Nassau County roof include the following:

Manhasset Hills is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 3,592 at the 2010 census. Neighboring communities include Herricks, North Hills, North New Hyde Park, and Lake Success.
By the late 1950s, much of the land in Manhasset Hills had been developed by developers. One of the last major developments to be built was the Cherrywood Homes development, which was built on a 24-acre tract by Barney and Martin Spiegel. The development was built with 88 split-level houses designed by A.H. Salkowitz, and was constructed on one of the last remaining major undeveloped tracts of land available in Manhasset Hills.
In the 1980s and 1990s, roughly 1,000 Manhasset Hills residents attempted to prevent the State of New York from placing a group home in their neighborhood for people with mental disabilities. Many were concerned that their property values would decrease because of the group home’s presence, and attempted to change a law in order to prevent the home from being established. The residents were successful in preventing the group home from being established in their community, and the home was instead established in nearby New Hyde Park.
The Long Island Motor Parkway used to run along the northern border of the hamlet.
